Title: I T ' S T I M E T O A C T THEY COULDN'T STOP THEM Acts 5:12–42 (ESV) Imagine Church USA — Pembroke Pines, FL · Sunday, July 12, 2026 · 10AM BIG IDEA (Repeat 3–4 times throughout) "What God starts, no man can stop." Supporting line: "They couldn't jail it, beat it, or ban it — because you can't stop a people who obey God." OPENING HOOK (Open with the personal story. Tell it like you're reliving it — because you are.) Let me tell you what happened to me this week. I was sitting in my car — in the gym parking lot.
Watching Argentina play Egypt. And it was bad. Argentina — one of the best teams on the planet — down two to nothing. Two–nothing. And I'm sitting there, thumb on the phone, and I said, it's over. I was about to turn it off.
I had already written the ending in my head. They lost. Done. Move on. But church — I didn't turn it off in time. Because right when I had counted them out — they scored.
And then they scored again. And then — they scored again. Imagine Church USA · IT'S TIME TO ACT · They Couldn't Stop Them 1 Argentina came back and won that game three to two. Down 0–2 — and they won 3–2. And I sat in that parking lot, by myself, losing my mind. 😄 And in that moment — I felt the Lord say something to me. "That's My church.
That's My people. Down two to nothing — and unstoppable." Because here's the truth — Everybody counted them out at halftime. But the scoreboard at halftime is not the final score. Have you ever watched something that just would not stop? You throw everything at it — and it keeps coming.
Well, in Acts 5, the most powerful people in the city tried everything — to stop a handful of ordinary believers. They threatened them. They arrested them. They beat them. They banned them. And look what the Bible records — they couldn't stop them.
Because when God starts something — no jail, no threat, no system, no devil — can shut it down. Hear me, Imagine Church — What God starts, no man can stop. And if God has started something in your life — I came to tell you today — they can't stop you either. THE TEXT (Read the arc: power → arrest → angel → "obey God" → Gamaliel → rejoicing.) Acts 5:12–42 (ESV) — selected Imagine Church USA · IT'S TIME TO ACT · They Couldn't Stop Them 2 "Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles… And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women… they even carried out the sick into the streets… that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them…
But the high priest rose up… and filled with jealousy… they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 'Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.' … And when they had brought them, they set them before the council… saying, 'We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching…' But Peter and the apostles answered, 'We must obey God rather than men.' … [Gamaliel said] '…keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!' …
Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus." (Pause. Look up.) They had the fire. The crowd.
The miracles. The system tried to shut it down. Jail couldn't hold it. Threats couldn't scare it. A beating couldn't stop it. They couldn't stop them.
POINT 1 — UNSTOPPABLE COMES FROM HIS PRESENCE, NOT YOUR COMFORT (Foundation point. Build the fire.) Look how it starts — verse 12. "Many signs and wonders were regularly done… and more than ever believers were added." People were carrying the sick into the streets — hoping Peter's shadow would pass over them. His shadow.
Church, that's not personality. That's not marketing. Imagine Church USA · IT'S TIME TO ACT · They Couldn't Stop Them 3 That's Presence. The world took notice — not because they were impressive — but because God was with them. And hear me, Imagine Church — what makes a believer unstoppable is not your talent, your money, or your comfort. It's His presence on your life.
(Preaching moment — lift it.) You don't need to be the strongest on paper. You need the presence of God on your life. One shadow full of God — does more than a thousand programs full of hype. (Illustration + application.) You've met somebody like this before.
No title. No platform. No microphone. But when they walk into the room — something shifts. The atmosphere changes. People get quiet.
Something holy shows up. That's not personality. That's presence. And here's your application — this week: Stop trying to be impressive. Start carrying His presence into the ordinary places. That job.
That classroom. That locker room. That parking lot. You don't have to preach a sermon — just carry Him in so strong that your shadow blesses people. Repeatable line: "Unstoppable doesn't come from your comfort. It comes from His presence."
What God starts, no man can stop. POINT 2 — REAL FREEDOM IS OBEYING GOD OVER THE FEAR OF MEN (Conviction point. The heart of the message.) Imagine Church USA · IT'S TIME TO ACT · They Couldn't Stop Them 4 Now watch the middle of the story. They get arrested. Thrown in prison.
And in the middle of the night — an angel opens the doors. But look at what the angel says. Verse 20. "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life." God didn't break them out to go hide. He broke them out to go preach — right back in the same place that jailed them.
And when they're dragged before the council and told to shut up — Peter says the line this whole room needs to hear. Verse 29. "We must obey God rather than men." Church — that is real freedom. The truest freedom a human being can ever have — is to fear God so much that you stop fearing people. (Slow down.
Get personal.) Some of you are in bondage right now — not to a jail — but to the opinions of people. You've gone quiet about your faith because of who's watching. You've shrunk back at work, at school, in your own family — afraid of what people would think. But the freest people who ever lived — decided: I answer to God, not to the crowd. Real freedom isn't doing whatever you want.
Real freedom is being so surrendered to God that no man can control you. (Illustration + application.) Let me make it real. Think about the last time you went quiet. The coworker made the joke — and you laughed instead of standing up. The group chat said something about God — and you left it on read.
The family dinner got tense — so you softened your faith to keep the peace. I've been there. We've all been there. Imagine Church USA · IT'S TIME TO ACT · They Couldn't Stop Them 5 But watch the apostles. They had every reason to stay quiet. The people who could end their lives said, stop talking.
And they walked right back into the temple and preached anyway. Here's your application this week: Find the ONE room where you've been silent — and go back in and be free. Not obnoxious. Not weird. Just unashamed. Because the moment you stop needing their approval — you become untouchable.
Repeatable line: "You'll never be free until you fear God more than you fear people." POINT 3 — IF IT'S FROM GOD, YOU CANNOT STOP IT (Breakthrough point. Let it climb.) Now here comes the wisdom that ends the whole matter. A leader named Gamaliel stands up. Verses 38 and 39.
"If this plan is of man, it will fail. But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them — you might even be found fighting against God." Catch that. If it's from God — you can't stop it. You can delay it. You can attack it.
You can throw everything at it. But you cannot overthrow what heaven started. And look at how they walked out. Verse 41. They didn't leave defeated. They left rejoicing — that they were counted worthy to suffer for the Name.
They got beaten — and they threw a praise party. Because they knew something the council didn't — You can't stop what God put in motion. Imagine Church USA · IT'S TIME TO ACT · They Couldn't Stop Them 6 (Preaching moment — full voice.) Somebody in this room has been under attack — and you thought the pressure meant you were losing. No. (Callback — bring it home with the parking-lot story.)
Remember Argentina. Down two to nothing. Everybody watching had already written the ending. The guy in the gym parking lot had his thumb on the button to turn it off — that was me! But here's what I didn't know sitting in that car — it wasn't over. Because they weren't done.
And church — hear me — the score at halftime of your life is not the final score. You looked at your marriage — 0–2. You looked at your finances — 0–2. You looked at that child, that diagnosis, that dream — 0–2. And you were about to turn it off. Don't you dare turn it off.
If God started it — the attack is not the end of your story. The jail is just a delay. The setback is just a setup. The 0–2 is just the first half. They couldn't stop them — and if God is in it — they can't stop you either. Verse 42 — every single day, they kept preaching.
They didn't slow down. They sped up. That's an unstoppable church. Repeatable line: "If God started it, no man can stop it." Imagine Church USA · IT'S TIME TO ACT · They Couldn't Stop Them 7 BRINGING IT HOME So let me ask you. What have you let people stop — that God actually started?
A calling. A dream. A conviction. A witness. You put it in the prison of people's opinions. But the same God who opened those doors at midnight — is saying to you today: go stand up and speak.
You are free. Not to sit. Not to hide. Free to obey God over the fear of man. What God starts, no man can stop. And they will not be able to stop what He's about to do through you. .
WHAT DO I DO THIS WEEK? Action steps from the message: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Name the prison. Write down the ONE area where the fear of people has silenced you — and decide today you answer to God. Go stand and speak. Have one bold, kind conversation about Jesus with someone this week — right back in the room you've been quiet in. Choose obedience over approval. Do the one thing God's been asking, even if people won't understand it.
Rejoice in the pressure. Whatever you're fighting — thank God in it. Praise is how the unstoppable walk out of the courtroom. Don't slow down — speed up. Pick one way to go MORE public with your faith this week, not less. Name the prison.
